Title: Interactive Experience: Try It Yourself - Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR), & Three-Dimensional (3D) Printing at Mayo Clinic

Description:

Join 3D printing expert Amy Alexander as she allows you to use AR and VR apps to view how Mayo Clinic's Department of Radiology is using its advanced anatomic modeling laboratory equipped with a variety of 510(k)-cleared applications, 3D surface scanners, and 3D printers for use at the point-of-care. In short, radiological data like CT or MRI imaging can be segmented to isolate anatomies and pathologies of interest. From there, the segmentation can be converted into a digital 3D mesh, which can be displayed in VR, AR, or 3D printed. Pros and cons to each approach will be thoroughly discussed. Design and manufacture of patient-specific surgical cutting guides will also be covered.

Topics covered include:
  • Download the app and try it yourself (just like Pokemon Go™)
  • Segmentation of anatomy from radiological imaging
  • Basic computer aided design (CAD) functions for anatomic modeling
  • Viewing files in VR and AR
  • 3D printing: why & how
  • Surgical cutting guide design and applications
